Ascending the road which leads to the Gavia Pass from Bormio you reach Santa Caterina, a small locality in Valfurva, 1,738 metres above sea level dominated by the imposing Pizzo Tresero mountain.
Known from the end for the 19th century for its ferruginous waters, Santa Caterina Valfurva became a skiing resort in the sixties when the first ski lift was built, since then various modernisation and development projects have been carried out in the ski area finishing with the most recent work carried out in 2005 in preparation for the World Alpine Ski Championships which confirmed Santa Caterina as an important tourist resort with a ski area offering 50 km. of perfect snow-covered slopes from November to May.
Today it is considered as the ultimate snow paradise, not only for the numerous alpine ski runs, but also for its famous cross-country tracks, for its competitive “Valtellina” tracks both 5km and 10 km in length, for its touristic “Valtellina” track, 8 km. in length, for its snowed paths in the centuries-old conifer woodlands to be enjoyed using snowshoes etc.
In our hotel we offer a heated room, free of charge, where you can leave your skis, ski-boots and snowshoes on your return after a very full day: are you missing any equipment you need to practise your favourite sport? Our skiing guests do not need to worry about long queues at the ski pass offices, as passes are available at reception on your arrival.
During summertime Santa Caterina changes aspect, it is coloured with green meadows, light blue high altitude lakes, flowered balconies: woodlands full of squirrels, deer, marmot, which you may be fortunate enough to spot on your excursions. Hotel Confinale becomes a departure point for easy walks, accessible to everyone but also for more demanding alpine routes. There are many purposely prepared mountain-bike and motorbike itineraries: we will be happy to supply our guests with any necessary information and give any material or maps available for walking or wheeled itineraries.
